Create Your Ebook Step 6: Evaluate the Results

When you create an ebook and launch it, evaluate the learning and marketing results so you can determine the next steps for new products.

Revisit those learning and marketing objectives from step one. What were they? What did you want your people to be able to do when they finished reading your book in terms of their learning and actions and the actions you wanted them to take for your business?

Evaluate learning objectives

You evaluate learning objectives through reader comments and surveys related to your ebook objectives. Find out:

  • What they liked
  • What they used
  • What questions or comments they have
  • What other problems do they have that they would like you to address in this ebook or future ones.

You can e-mail those on your list who requested your e-book and ask them directly or use a tool like Survey Monkey.

Evaluate your marketing objectives

What were your marketing objectives for your ebook? For example, if it was a gift for joining your mailing list, then how many people joined?

You can find out this information through your Google Analytics account.

Determine your next steps

How successful was your ebook?

If your audience liked it, and you fulfilled your marketing objectives, great! Go back to Step 1 and think about how you can re-purpose your product. For example, can you turn that ebook into a video or incorporate it into a larger book you can sell?

Or maybe you had less satisfying results. Maybe they liked your materials, but you didn't meet your marketing objectives.

If so, then it's also time to revisit Step 1. Ask yourself questions like:

  • What needs of your community weren't met?
  • What could you change or add?
  • Or do you need to offer something else instead?
  • Did the format meet their needs, or do your people need this content in another format, such as a video?
  • How can you improve your launch?
  • What can you change to launch this ebook more successfully next time?

Questions for reflection and comment

Where can you find resources or mentoring to answer these questions-- if they apply?

  • How can you find out more about the people you serve?
  • What else do you need to learn about writing an ebook (or the type of product you launched)?
  • What else do you need to learn about launching your product online and in person?

    Hi Ellen,

Thanks for your comment. Would you like to have more information about the success of your launch, or do you like your quick review. If it works for you, would you share your method?

It's a good overview of the evaluation process. I probably do all of it in a few quick thoughts, not so systematically.
